Erakovic is fast climbing the WTA world rankings and could be heading
for the big time if the New Zealander can continue to maintain the
progress she has made in the past 12 months, rising 100 places to 53rd
in the world.On grass, the 20-year-old recently earned her first
singles title at Surbiton and a doubles trophy at the pre-Wimbledon
warm-up event, the Ordina Open. Making her first appearance
this year in the Wimbledon ladies’ singles, she won her opening match
7-6, 7-6, beating her doubles partner, Michaela Krajicek of the
Netherlands, an excellent grass court player. She now meets Julia
Goerges of Germany. She is also competing in the doubles with Krajicek.
If she manages to progress to the fourth round, she could, in
theory, meet the number two seed, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. She lost
to Jankovic in the second round at this year’s Roland Garros so there
would be an incentive to seek revenge. Her grass court form suggests
she could prove more of a threat this time, having only lost five
matches and won 35 on the surface. At this year’s first grass
court event, The Surbiton Trophy, she won the title by defeating
British number one Anna Keothavong. In Birmingham, she extended her
grass court run by reaching the semi-finals, narrowly losing to
Kataryna Bondarenko, a junior Wimbledon champion. She beat some tough
players on route to the semi's, Bondarenko’s sister, Alona, and Sania
Mirza of India in the previous rounds.
