Basics in malay language

okay, firstly you must know how to greet people using malay language.. here, i'm going to translate some greeting words for you..

Good morning = Selamat pagi / Selamat siang
Good afternoon = Selamat tengah hari
Good evening = Selamat petang
Good night = Selamat malam
How are you? = Apa khabar?

when it comes to replying the greetings, for example if they ask you 'Apa khabar?', you can answer

I'm fine, thank you = Khabar baik, terima kasih
Not so well = Khabar tidak baik / khabar buruk

Now, in Malaysia, we often use the word 'lah'.. Foreigners might find it difficult to use since it has no meaning.. It is not enough to just say 'lah'.. You must say it with an attitude and zest that can only be cultivated through carefully observing the average Malaysian on the street..

But don't worry about it.. Append 'lah' to a verb. For example :

"Go back to your room lah"

If this is confusing for you, it's okay.. You can slowly learn how to use 'lah' if you always communicate with Malaysian.. Slowly append 'lah' in simple words. For example :

- Yes lah
- No lah

Aiyoh

This is a flexible term used by Malaysians to express either pain, panic or surprise. 'Alamak' is a good substitute. It does not matter if you use it at the beginning or end of your sentence. The Malaysian Indians have a modified 'aiyoh' to 'aiyoyo' which essentially means the same thing but can be used in humorous situation as well. The Malays have a specific term for pain - 'Aduh'. So if you trip and fall, yell 'aduh!' for sympathy.

Alan i never use Aiyo, Alamak or Aiyoyo.. -.-"..

We in Sabah find it pretty weird since we prefer using Bah =P..
