You can call this her second chance. A technicality led to her
resignation as Miss Philippines Universe 10 years ago and Tisha Silang
is making sure that history does not repeat itself.

In 1998, Tisha won the Miss Philippines Universe crown but had to
give it up because of her Canadian citizenship. While that win has
remained the proudest moment of her life, she's hoping that taking part
in The Amazing Race Asia will trump that.

Joining her is her boyfriend of three and a half years, Geoff, and
by all accounts, participating, much less winning the race will be an
uphill battle says the couple. For one thing, their relationship is the
classic definition of opposites attract.

"Nobody would have thought that we would end up dating. We have
very different personalities but have managed to make it work so far,"
notes Tisha.

Quips Geoff on the first time they were introduced by a mutual
friend," I was interested in Tisha for obvious reasons. And Tisha
wasn't interested, for obvious reasons."

This is also the second time that the couple has auditioned for the
show and the couple almost missed the deadline too. "We were in such a
rush to submit the video I can't say we did anything really
spectacular," Tisha admits.

The last and most important reason against them has to do with
their horrible track record when it comes to traveling. While on
vacation in Boracay, the couple missed not once, two but three
consecutive flights back home to Manila. And by that time, they were
broke as well. Tisha says with a laugh, "And now we want to race
together...should be interesting." Fingers are crossed but hopefully,
the two won't be making the same mistake again, especially on the show.

"Missing a flight, I think that is the most embarrassing thing you
can do while traveling," admits Geoff. But rather than to lay blame,
the couple made the best of their situation. "Tisha was shooting for
FHM and we were supposed to be there only for the weekend. By then we
had spent all out money in re-booking and extension fees. But time
flies when you're in love and having a ball."

And the other reason for wanting to be in the race is of course, to
counter the loss of Team Philippines from the previous season, jokes
Geoff. Marc and Rovilson came in third in the last show. He says, "We
have huge shoes to fill after the stint that Marc and Rovilson pulled
off."

Nonetheless, the couple is certain that they will bring to the race
the love and respect that has been the foundation of their
relationship. Geoff says, "Tisha and I have had a sound relationship,
from the time we have met. And now we are testing our relationship, by
entering the race."

You may see them as showbiz cast-offs, but hey, you don’t need to be a somebody to come out first in ‘The Amazing Race’

BY NICOLA M. SEBASTIAN — A retired beauty queen who’s misplaced her crown and an ex-Powerboy you probably had a crush on — like, five years ago. How far do you think a pair like this would make it if they joined, say, the “Amazing Race Asia 3?” Representing the Philippines in the latest Race are dating couple Tisha Silang, who had to retire from her ’98 title as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe because of her Canadian passport, and Geoff Rodriguez, who, well, you know. But before you scratch out our chances of bringing it home this time ‘round, it pays to take a closer look.

For one, despite the endless supply of jokes fired at it, showbiz really ain’t easy. We may all gawk and laugh at those Miss Universe docus that show hopefuls air-brushing their behinds, going on nothing-but-water diets, and sleeping in their heels, or raise an eyebrow at all those TV personalities that try to have a personality as they host yet another cheesy show — but, damn, all that really is a lot of work!

In fact, the very same thing that brings these two lovebirds together is what makes them the right stuff for showbiz: The spirit of (not too-) friendly competition. “It’s a fact that Tisha is the most competitive girl I know,” Geoff shares of the girl of his dreams; “That’s probably why we gel so well together — we push each other to greater heights in whatever we do.”

“Now that you mention it,” Tisha amusedly realizes, “we like doing anything that involves saying, ‘hahaha, I beat you!’” Maybe what it takes to be perpetually camera/crown-ready might be exactly what Geoff and Tish will need in what AXN is touting as “the Toughest Race.” They may not both be as buff as Marc Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez from last season (for obvious, gender-based reasons), but they certainly make up for the lack of testosterone with what Geoff sums up as “a raw emotion and intensity.”

‘Course, showbiz may be quick to classify Geoff and Tisha — both of whose time on the local star circuit was as short as Aubrey Miles’ team’s pitiful run in the first Amazing Race Asia — as dead and done has-beens. But it’s all about priorities — and being man (or woman) enough to see things for what they are.

“I was a fad, basically,” Geoff states bluntly of the time he spent dancing about in a towel to the Backstreet Boys. “And I enjoyed every minute of it. Looking back on it now, I’m probably blushing a little bit, but I wouldn’t trade those days for anything… it’s made me who I am today.” As hard as it may be to imagine what good came out of the Powerboys besides a renewed public appreciation for deodorant, the guy’s got an honest point.

And, like Geoff, Tisha has put those days behind her, having since “taken on the corporate world, working as a Business Development Manager for the past seven years.” So, as egocentric as the world of glitz and gossip may be — sorry, honeys, they’ve moved on.

That’s why, unlike most TV personalities who would see in “The Amazing Race” an Amazing Opportunity for Publicity, for Tish and Geoff it’s strictly personal. It’s an opportunity, alright, but an opportunity to ask the tough questions, “like ‘can we do it?’ says Geoff, “or, ‘are we good enough to survive?’” Naturally, there are other less-trying but equally-existential offshoots to joining: “I love seeing new places, and we all know that travelling is not by any means cheap,” adds Tisha. “So a chance where you get to travel for free? I’m so there!”

Whether you see them as showbiz castoffs or a grounded couple who’ve moved on to more important things (try life, maybe?), whether they’re trying to prove themselves to the world as more than media-portrayed pieces of meat, all that really matters is what they bring home from the competition — whether it’s the physical trophy or an (almost) better reward: a stronger belief in themselves and each other.

They may not be as celeb-rated as the other contestants — that include a pair of bona-fide beauty queens, an heiress, and the usual quota of model/actor types. But, the truth is, you don’t need to be a “somebody” to come out first in this Race.

GEOFF AND TISHA: The song “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis is on repeat on our iPods.

GEOFF: I’m addicted to Tisha.

TISHA: What it takes to win the Amazing Race is an equal balance between physical, emotional, and mental strength.

GEOFF: I completely suck at soccer—I’m a frustrated soccer player.

TISHA: I’m happiest when I’m under the sun.

GEOFF: What attracted me first to Tisha was the fact that she didn’t like me. That’s probably the best way to get a guy, she’s good at that.

TISHA: To prepare for “The Amazing Race,” I took a crash course on how to drive a manual car and got LASIK eye surgery!

GEOFF: I am most excited about the Boxing Olympic event.

TISHA: The thing I love the most about Geoff is that he can drive me to do things I never thought I could accomplish.

GEOFF: I have the bad habit of… you’ll see in on the race!

TISHA: If I could get on a plane and fly away right now, I’d go to Tuscany

GEOFF: The most essential thing to have on a race is deodorant! No pun intended!

TISHA: Geoff are I are like Fred and Wilma.

GEOFF: Our battle plan for the race was just not to rush things and (not) look like an idiot on TV.

TISHA: I’m craving burgers and poutine (fries with gravy and cheese curds). YUM!

GEOFF: What I love the most about the Philippines is the beautiful people, and not just from an aesthetic point of view.

TISHA: The one thing I wouldn’t do for a competition is shave my head.

GEOFF: When Tisha gets mad…Tisha doesn’t get mad; I’m the one that’s always mad and stressed, so she has to worry about calming me down.

TISHA: The secret to winning the race of life is faith.

GEOFF: If I had $100,000, I would… oh you’d know. Hahaha. I wouldn’t mind blowing 100 grand on like a big event, like a party, or wedding.

TISHA: The Filipino spirit is resilient

GEOFF: The Filipino Spirit is in evolution right now. It’s at a very delicate turning point which is good.

GEOFF: What can viewers expect from the Amazing Race Asia Season 3? It’s going to be the most intense and most grueling out of the three seasons.

yes, charles and dexter, welcome back.

Tisha is actually a pure blooded Filipino. Her parent are both native of Calatagan, Batangas, Philippines. Her parents acquired the Canadian citizenship for staying long in Canada and Tisha was petitioned and eventually grew up there.

Like Geoff, Tisha is a holder of two passports - Canadian passposrt and Philippine passport. So they are enjoying two priveledges from two countries. They can present any of their passport to the immigration for checking.

According to what I have read, Geof is half-Australian half-Filipino. But according to wikipedia, he is half-Canadian so I am also confused.

After the third-place finish of buddies Marc Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez in the second season of The Amazing Race Asia, the Philippines will be represented in the third season by dating couple Tisha Silang and Geoff Rodriguez.

The two are actually familiar faces in local showbiz. Tisha was crowned Bb. Pilipinas-Universe in 1998 but resigned because of her Canadian citizenship. Geoff, on the other hand, was a member of the all-male group Powerboys—along with Jordan Herrera, Frank Garcia, Greg Martin, and Jay Salas—who became famous after appearing in a deodorant commercial.

PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had the opportunity to talk to Tisha at the launch of The Amazing Race Asia 3 (TARA 3) sponsored by Caltex last night, September 4, at Fiamma Bar & Resto on Jupiter St., Makati City. Those invited had the privilege to watch the first episode—minus the ending—that will be aired on September 11 in AXN.

Tisha, who just arrived from Toronto, Canada early morning on the same day, actually cannot divulge too much information about their participation and experience because of confidentiality clause.

"[You will be] sued for five million dollars," warns Tisha if she says too much. "You're not allowed to divulge talaga. I mean, it would ruin it, because the reason why the people watch it is because they wanna see what happened. And like, even us, the contestants, for what we went through, we want everybody to also have the enjoyment of knowing, wondering who got eliminated."

What are the details they can't talk about?

"Particular things about the show. Anything that hasn't aired yet, hindi puwede. But we were gone for one month, and it's really the toughest race ever. For me ha, I've watched a lot of episodes, pero siguro it's different when you're the one actually doing it. But it caused a lot of tears, a lot of stress, and it's not easy at all," said Tisha cautiously.

Although she can't reveal the places and countries they went to, Tisha said that the race ended last June.

PARTNERSHIP WITH GEOFF. Tisha and Geoff have been dating for four years now. But how was their partnership throughout the race?

"Explosive!" Tisha says with a laugh. "It's just that hindi maiiwasan na minsan mag-aaway kayo. You're under high stress and situations, and we're both so competitive against other people. We are also competitive between the two of us. Siyempre, there are instances... ‘Tsaka kami lang yung couple in a relationship, everybody else is like sister-brother, friends...kami lang yung dating. So when you're dating, it's different."

Was there a point when she wanted to break up with him?

"Oo! I'm sure...I don't know!" she laughs. "There are times that you're like, 'Ay, ayoko na sa ‘yo, ‘no!' But I mean, it's the situation that you're in. Siguro we won't be as bad as the last fierce couple that was fighting, Henry and Terri [Reed, also from the Philippines]."

Who had more temper, she or Geoff?

"Si Geoff, I'm sure!" she says quickly. "Probably because he's more competitive than I am. Plus, he's best friend with Marc and Rovilson, so siyempre gusto niya, ‘We're just as good as you guys.' But it helps, it helps me to push also.

What were the things that she discovered while they were in the race?

"That there are things that I can do that I would have never imagined that I'd ever do," replies Tisha. "And you will see that later. Yung mga napapanood mo sa TV, you're like, ‘There's no way I'd do that.' Pero ‘pag nandun ka na, gagawin mo, e. Kasi you see everybody else doing it, parang you'll think, ‘Why can't I do it if they're doing it?' I can do it, so..."

Why did she join Amazing Race Asia?

"Well, I was a fan of the show before... But I wanted to join the one in the States, pero kailangan U.S. citizen ka to join. So when they came up with the one in Asia, we sent an audition tape pero for last season. Pero hindi kami natanggap last year.

"Sila Marc and Rovilson yung last year, who happen to be our friends also. So, parang last year we were watching with them. And then when it stopped airing, we were like, ‘Ano nang gagawin natin ng Thursday? Wala na tayong gagawin.' So we sent in another audition tape for this year," relates the Fil-Canadian beauty queen.

BIG SHOES TO FILL. Tisha and Geoff have some big shoes to fill since Marc and Rovilson lasted until the final episode and ended up third last season. Is there any pressure on their part?

"Yeah, that was a big pressure kasi we know that there's so many fans in the Philippines ng Amazing Race. So parang, you don't wanna be out first. You wanna do well so the Filipinos has something to watch for a long time. Plus the fact that Marc and Rovilson did so well, it made us want to at least sana do as well as them. But you know, there are different dynamics. They're two guys, that's an advantage also sometimes. So, we'll see if we match up to them."

Did they get any tips from Marc and Rovilson?

"You know, they can give maybe little tips, like make sure you read things carefully. But they can't really do anything because they don't know what you're gonna be doing. Everything's different, so kahit na ano'ng sabihin nila, it wouldn't help," says Tisha.

THE OTHER TEAMS. What can the Filipinos expect from TARA 3?

"What I find different this season... Last season everybody was, you know, very nice to each other. This one, everyone's cutthroat, there's a lot of characters. The teams who have seen the race already, they said it's hilarious. So I think we have a lot of funny characters also on this one. It's gonna be more exciting to watch.

"Nothing can prepare you for it. You can be the most athletic person and it wouldn't help. It's like a mix of a little bit of athleticism, a lot of strategy, and a lot of patience and luck."

Aside from Tisha, there are two other beauty queens this season—Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova and best friend Miss Thailand Universe 2006 first runner-up Pailin Rungratanasunthorn, who represented Thailand in Miss Earth 2006. Although Natalie is Russian-Canadian—she represented Canada in the Miss Universe—she will represent Thailand along with Pailin in TARA 3.

Tisha has this explanation about Natalie's case: "She's based in Thailand now. She's married to one of the top tennis players [Paradorn Srichapan] in Thailand. So she joined with another Thai beauty queen, so they're team is the beauty queens."

Did the make any friends with the other teams?

"We were more focused on the competition," answers Tisha. "We did make friends, like we still talk to them now and there's always plans to try to meet up with everybody again. Especially before nag-air yung race, parang they're the only ones you can talk to about it because you can't share your experience with anybody else. So it's just them. So, you know, sa mga Facebook, nag-uusap kami. We always keep in touch, it's something that will always keep us in touch with each other."

Aside from the Philippines and Thailand, the other teams this season consist of pairs from Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, South Korea, and Singapore.

AMAZING RACE VS. SURVIVOR. Interestingly, the airing of Amazing Race Asia 3 will coincide with the start of GMA-7's Survivor Philippines, hosted by Paolo Bediones. In case you don't know, Paolo became Tisha's boyfriend after she won in Binibining Pilipinas, where they first met.

"Ewan ko, wala akong alam. But yeah, I heard about that," says Tisha when asked about her reaction to the "competition."

What can he say about Paolo?

"I'm happy for him, he's got that show now. I haven't spoken to Paolo since he probably interviewed me that time I was about to get married. That was like 2003," says Tisha, who was once married to a non-showbiz guy but they separated afterwards.

Did she also consider joining Survivor Philippines?

"Ayoko ng Survivor, it's worse, like the things that they have to go through," she replies with a smile.

The winners of The Amazing Race Asia 3 took home $100,000. So we asked Tisha if she and Geoff are richer by $100,000 now.

"No comment!" she says laughing.

MANILA, Philippines—Team Philippines’ Geoff Rodriguez and Tisha
Silang landed the No. 2 spot on the first day of a month-long
competition for the reality program, “The Amazing Race Asia Season 3,”
Inquirer Entertainment learned.
During the “Tara3” exclusive screening at the Inquirer offices in
Makati City, we took a peek into what transpired in the day-long race
that began in Bangkok and culminated in Chiang Mai in Thailand. Oliver
Faivre, 26, and Mai Sarasas, 24, representatives of the host country,
placed first.
On the first race day, all 10 teams were made to eat bugs, pound on
rice grains and clean buses. More of these on the action-adventure
channel AXN on Sept. 11 at 9 p.m.
The teams — two pairs each from Thailand, Malaysia and India, and
one pair each from the Philippines, Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong —
race to win $100,000.
In a statement sent to Inquirer Entertainment, AXN dubbed the new
season as “The toughest race ever.” Fatigue level was so high, the
statement said, that one production crew member was hospitalized. The
race is said to be faster in pace, with shorter breaks, compared to the
first two seasons.
Geoff, 26, and Tisha, 32, have been dating for three and a half
years. “Nobody would have thought that we’d end up dating. We have very
different personalities,” said Tisha.
The couple said they have huge shoes to fill, since TV host Marc
Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez, as RP representatives last season,
finished third.
Representing Hong Kong this season are best buddies Sam Wu, 32, university lecturer and Vince Chung, 32, comedian and host.

Eye candy
Also from Thailand are Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova, 26, and
Pailin Rungratanasunthorn, 25, Miss Earth Thailand 2006. They are the
“resident eye candy,” the AXN statement said. Last year, Natalie
married Thailand’s highest ranked tennis player, Paradorn Srichaphan,
and Pailin was one of her bridesmaids. “We love to try new things,”
said Natalie. “Give us bungee jumping, parachuting, paragliding and
para-sailing any day. We are competitive, we’re in shape and we’re
going to kick ass.”
Cousins Neena, 24, and Amit Rai, 24, from India said they are “poles
apart in everything but always manage to get along.” Amit, a real
estate consultant, credits his cousin Neena, a commercial model, for
getting him hooked on “Tara.”
The father-and-son team of Niroo Asrani, actor, 53 and Kapil Asrani,
HR executive, 25, is from India, too. Kapil said joining the race was a
chance to have some quality time with his father.
AXN has brought to Asian viewers reality programs like “Survivor,”
“Fear Factor” and “The Contender.” With a total household reach of over
83 million across Asia (including 40 million on time-block basis in
China), “The Amazing Race” has become its signature series.

New Zealand boy and Canadian girl are RP’s bet in TARA

Though most couples strive for harmony believing that it ultimately makes for a good foundation to a solid relationship, there are those who think otherwise.

Geoff Rodriguez and Tisha Silang, after three blissful years of being together, are eager to rock the boat and test their relationship. And they’re doing it on international television.

The couple is among nine others in The Amazing Race Asia, or TARA.
“Tisha and I have had a sound relationship, from the time we have met. And now we are testing that by entering the race”, the 26-year-old Rodriguez confirms.

Silang, 32, admits too much of unanimity is a cause of concern for both of them.

“We never really fight. The past three years was just a great big ball. By joining the race we’d get to know more of each other.”
The couple says their relationship is a classic example of “opposite attracts.”

”Nobody would have thought that we would end up dating. We have very different personalities but [we] have managed to make it work so far,” notes Silang.

”Hopefully, this will continue during the race”, Geoff adds smiling.
This is the second time that the couple has auditioned for the show. The couple missed the deadline the first time. They almost missed the deadline for this season too.

“We were in such a rush to submit the video. I can’t say we did anything really spectacular”, Silang discloses. Some find it ironic that the two are to represent the Philippines.

Silang is a Canadian by citizenship, which 10 years ago caused her to give up her title as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe.

Geoff Rodriguez (whose real name is Geoff Briz) is from New Zealand who came to Manila a decade ago to seek opportunities in modeling. He is now an occasional actor and model, but mostly a fixture in social events that require model types.

The Amazing Race Asia, is apparently not keen on citizenships among its participants. There is. Sam Wu, Chung’s partner, is originally from Singapore .

According to Rodriguez, another big reason they joined the contest is to “counter the loss of the team from the Philippines in the previous season”.

Last season, the team from the Philippines placed third. Australian Marc Nelson (who has been living in the Philippines for years) and buddy Rovilson Fernandez nearly topped the race but bogged down in the last task.

“Our plan is simple—we will just have fun. What I offer this team is unpredictability—that’ll keep the others guessing”, Rodriguez shares.

Silang counters, “Yeah, and I will be the one who will keep him from making a fool of himself.”

Allan Wu returns to hosting duties, as he guides teams along their adventure to reach the finishing mat to take home the $100,000 prize.

Geoff look funny when he gave that annoying look at Tisha, when she read the roadblock. Its kinda like me when I'm annoyed at my sisters if they didnt believe me that I am actually right....

Geoff is a victim of TARA's intention of pushing them to their limits. I fully understand the attitude of Geoff he is showing in this race because that is only normal to people who are under stress, tension, over-fatigue, under sleep, dehydration, etc. This makes me think the show is a saddist.

i think they will have more chances if Geoff tries to control himself..... It hard to control for anyone in understress,pressure.....

But it will be fine if he controls..... If he controls surely he will enjoy the race more what he is enjoying now....

I must agree that one does better if he isn't under his emotion. But I can't help myself but to agree with the kind of behavior Geoff is showing with the given circumstances. But his attitude so far is not purely detrimental to their chance of making to the final three since Tisha admitted in some interviews that Geoff being hot tempered pushed her to work harder and better.

We have to understand what is individuality to different people. People reacts diffferently. If others can handle it with poise and charm, that does not make the others who can't less of a person.

The point here is not how other people react graciously to such situation.

The point here is the circumstances or situations that push a certain person to react or display such behaviour.

In the preview shown for the next episode, there was a scene with the subtitle "We're so over after the race"! Was it Geoff & Tisha, cause they're the only dating team in the Race? OMG! I hope it doesn't happen Sad

. They look very good as a couple and I think it's just that Geoff is a hot-headed man, otherwise they are in love with each other. Reminds me of one of my friend & her boyfriend.
