Gulbis upsets Djokovic in Brisbane opener!

No.1 seed of the new World Tour tournament, Brisbane International, Novak Djokovic lost to Latvian Ernests Gulbis in straight sets 4:6, 4:6, in 1 hour and 29 minutes.

Gulbis made a break in the fifth game of the first set. Nole had two chances to break back, but the Latvian held and increased his lead to 4:2. The 20-year-old won the set 6:4 in 45 minutes.

Nole lacked energy, his service was not good today, he made four double faults and many unforced errors. The beginning of the second set was unusual. We saw four breaks in a row and Novak took the lead in the fifth game for the first time in the set. Unfortunately he let Gulbis break him again in the ninth game. Gulbis then efficiently served it out with love for his first win over Djokovic.

"I am not panicking," he told reporters.

"The Australian Open is my highest goal for this part of the year and I really want to play well there.

"It's not the end of the world. It's the first match, so I'm not going to be pessimistic.

"I have a lot of time now to prepare for the Aussie Open."

His next stop is Sydney!

Number three in the world received a WC invitation from the organisers of The Medibank International, in order to prepare and find his form for the Australian Open where he defends the title. The tournament in Sydney (ATP World Tour 250) starts on Monday, January 12, and will be played til January 17 (Saturday final). The prize is 484,750$.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, David Nalbandian, Tomas Berdych, Tommy Robredo, Richard Gasquet are also in the men's field

Novak continues warming up for AO in Sydney!

Tennis : Novak Djokovic - Page 7 135

Novak will play a few more matches before the Australian Open. This
week he's in Sydney, at the Medibank International ATP World Tour 250
tournament, that is played from January 12 to January 17.

The world number three was awarded a wildcard into the tournament after
his first round loss to Ernests Gulbis at the Brisbane International
last week.

"I usually try to keep the week before any grand slam [free] because I
want to prepare and I want to save as much energy as I can. But, as I
said, I've had a lack of the matches and I made some major changes,
with the racquet for example, so I need to get some more matches under
my belt so I can feel comfortable. I decided to play here because of
the lack of the matches prior to the Australian Open and I think I need
some more official matches so I can get into the rhythm."

This will be his first appearance in Sydney, and he's very excited about it.

"I've heard Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world' - said Djokovic at the press conference.

"I hope I will have some time to visit the city as well, but the
priority is to play hopefully a couple of matches and do as best I can."

As a top seed Djokovic has a first round BYE, and will play his second
round match on Tuesday against the winner of the match between Andreas
Seppi (ITA) and Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA).

Novak's H2H with Mathieu is 2:1 and he won all four matches against Seppi.

His possible quarterfinal opponents are Mario Ancic (CRO) and Tommy
Robredo (ESP), and in the semifinals he could meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
(FRA, 3) and Tomas Berdych (CZE, 6). Four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt
is in the other half of the draw, as well as David Nalbandian (ARG, 4),
Gilles Simon (FRA, 2), Richard Gasquet, Mardy Fish. Novak can't meet
them before the finals.

Russian Dmitry Tursunov won the tournament in 2008. The prize money is 484.750 $.

Djokovic storms into the quarterfinals of Sydney!

Tennis : Novak Djokovic - Page 7 136

Top seed Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Medibank
International with a comfortable 6:1, 6:2 win over Frenchman Paul-Henri
Mathieu in just 54 minutes.

Nole broke Mathieu’s service twice in the first set, and very quickly
had a 5:0 lead. The Frenchman took only one game, and then Djokovic
closed the set 6:1 in 26 minutes.

Number three in the world continued playing in the same rhythm in the
second set, dominating in every aspect of the game. He broke Mathieu’s
service in the opening game and then held for 2:0. Both players held
their services til the seventh game when Novak made another break for
5:2. He was confident serving for the match, and won the set 6:2.

Djokovic will next play against Mario Ancic of Croatia, who defeated
Tommy Robredo in straight sets, 6:2, 6:1.This will be their fourth
match, Novak leads 2:1.

Diary no. 14 (Sydney)

Tennis : Novak Djokovic - Page 7 16

I haven't been writing for a long time, and I know you're not happy about it.

The way to make up for it, is to write a good and interesting diary! :)

To be honest, I wrote a pretty interesting story about a month ago. I
sent it (the way I usually do) to my webmaster on two emails, but the
report was bad – NOT DELIVERED! Now you're probably wondering 'why
haven't I saved that email'! Well, not my luck… Thank God, there are
people in my family capable of working on a computer! With my writing
diary once in a blue moon, and 'getting along' with electronics, you
can conclude that I'm not one of them! :)

I'm writing you from a hotel in Sydney, where I'm playing this week,
because my performance in Brisbane didn't go as it was expected, and a
lack of matches and warming up could be a problem ahead of the first
Grand Slam in Melbourne!

My Caesar salad has just arrived, with tempting side dish that I don't refuse…

Since this is my first visit to Sydney, I'm planing to make a tour and
check if it really is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, as
people say. We're staying in the centre of the city, which will make it
easier for us, because everything is relatively close… The beaches and
the sand are inevitable this time; we didn't manage to relax in the
previous city in which we had training obligations!

Coaches want to try out surfing, and as far as I'm concerned, I'm gonna
stay with my feet on the ground. It's much safer and people are
superior. Australian sea life, many surfers on white boards…everything
makes allusions to an animal that has pretty sharp teeth, that can tear
into your little bottom! Ha,ha,ha…

Ok, don't think I'm paranoic…I just want the risk to be minimized. :)
That doesn't mean I'm not going to enjoy with a coctail in my hand
watching them become that generous animal's prey! :) I'm kidding! GOD
FORBID!

We should trust the people who are in charge of security of public
beaches, and I'm convinced that they keep everything under control (or
maybe not)! Ha,ha,ha…

There! I'm back from the beach with a positive impression and 'rinsed'
feet. The rest of my body was out of the water, in which coaches were
splashing, trying to 'catch' a billow to carry them to the shore…

I'd like to go back now to the end of 2008 and write you about the last
tournament of the season, that ended triumphantly in China.

I described it in more detail in that 'lost' email, but I will try to do it in brief outline now.

The season ended the way it started, with a great success! It was the
best season in my career so far, the year I won my first Grand Slam,
but also the year of ups and downs!

The crisis period is part of sport and every athlete has to go through it. It makes us stronger for the forthcoming challenges.

I have experienced something very unusual in Shanghai! Groups of fans
of some players that played at Masters Cup were gathering every day in
front of our hotel. There was also a group of my fans that gave me
various presents, and in return as a mark of respect, I dedicated them
time for signing autographs and taking photos, etc. I was surprised with
how well informed they were about my career and private life. They were
giving me original presents every day!

I will not forget a girl's letter, where she wrote she had been waiting
me for 30 hours to take a photo with me and maybe have a hug! :) With
all her patience and wish to see me, she deserved much more than an
autograph and a hug! We won't go into detail! Ha,ha,ha…

However, one guy delighted me most! He learnt by heart to sing our
national anthem Boze Pravde (Lord, Give Us Justice) and a song Molitva
(meaning 'Prayer') in SERBIAN LANGUAGE! I could not believe it! A
Chinese that has no connection to Serbia (except me and tennis) sings
our national anthem!

You will be able to see that in a video that will be uploaded soon…

Regards to all of you from Kangaroo land! I wish you all the best in 2009!

Kangaroo Jack :)

Novak starts title defence with a straight sets win!

Tennis : Novak Djokovic - Page 7 140

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is through to the second round of
Australian Open with a straight-sets win over Italian qualifier Andrea
Stoppini (world no. 220), 6:2, 6:3, 7:5, in 1 hour and 54 minutes on
Rod Laver Arena on Monday.

Novak used his eighth break point in the third game of the first set to
go 2:1 up, and then held for 3:1. He made a break once again in the
fifth game to increase his lead to 4:1. Both players held their
services til the end of the set and Nole closed it 6:2.

After being a break down in the second set at 1:3, the best Serbian
tennis player won five games in a row, breaking his opponent’s service
three times for 6:3.

Third set didn't start well for Djokovic. He was broken twice, and was
down 0:4. He won three games in a row for 3:4, and later managed to
equalise to 5:5, with another break in the tenth game. Number three in
the world wanted to win this match in three sets and save his energy.
He put the pressure on the Italian, and broke for the third time in the
set to take it 7:5.

Novak had 6 winners more than Stoppini (34-28), and 9 unforced errors
less than the Italian (27-36). He served 8 aces and converted 7 of 18
break points.

Novak's postmatch interview you can read HERE.

Nole's second round opponent will be world no. 68, Frenchman Jeremy
Chardy, who defeated Marcos Daniel from Brasil, 6:4, 6:4, 6:1.

Djokovic and Chardy have never played eachother before.

Djokovic marches into the third round!
Tennis : Novak Djokovic - Page 7 141

Novak Djokovic is safely through to the third round of Australian Open
after defeating Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in straight sets, 7:5, 6:1,
6:3, in 1 hour and 44 minutes.

In a close first set Novak broke his opponent's service in the 12th game to take it 7:5.

Djokovic was brilliant in the second set. He broke Chardy with love in
the fourth game to put himself in control, and once again in the sixth
game to increase his lead. The Serb won the set 6:1 in just 23 minutes.

Nole was impressive at the beginning of the third set. He won four
games in a row, for a comfortable 4:0 lead, marching towards the third
round. He was broken once when serving for the match at 5:2, but broke

Defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round of
Australian Open with a hard-fought 6:2 4:6 6:3 7:6(4) victory over
world no.127 Amer Delic in 3 hours and 6 minutes on Rod Laver Arena on
Friday.

First set was very comfortable and solid from the world number three.
He broke Delic's service in the fourth game and then held to 15 to
increase his lead to 4:1. The Serb faced break points in the seventh
game. After saving the first, he got out of the trouble with an ace and
held for 5:2. Djokovic made a second break to take the set 6:2.

Delic earned himself a break point in the fifth game of the second set
but Djokovic saved it with an ace. The American earned another one and
used it to go up 3:2. Novak had an opportunity to break back
immediately, but Delic held to increase his lead. There were no breaks
til the end of the set and the 26-year-old won it 6:4.

Djokovic made a break in the second game of the third set and then
faced two break points, but saved the first with an ace and the second
with a service winner to hold for 3:0. Number three seed was serving
for the set at 5:3. He held to love for 6:3 and a two sets to one lead.

Nole faced scare in the tenth game of the fourth set but he managed to
save two break/set points to equalise to 5:5. The set went to a
tie-breaker and Djokovic won it 7-4.

Novak hit 30 winners and 11 aces. He made 27 unforced errors and converted 3 of 8 break points.

"I need some matches like this to feel really what is Grand Slam all
about," said Novak. "It's about those long four‑, five‑set matches in
the heat like this. I didn't really plan to be that long on the court,
of course. You always want to finish the job as soon as possible. As I
said, the positive thing is that I got more time out there, and looking
forward to the upcoming match."

His opponent in round four will be Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis who defeated American Mardy Fish (no.#23 seed) in straight sets.

Djokovic and Baghdatis met twice in 2007, Nole won both matches.

Novak sets up a quarterfinal with Roddick!

Tennis : Novak Djokovic - Page 7 145

Reigning Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic is through to the
quarterfinals with a win over Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in four sets,
6:1 7:6(1) 6:7(5) 6:2, in 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Djokovic needed only 25 minutes to take the first set 6:1.

Baghdatis played much better in the second set. After saving three
break points in the opening game, he broke Novak's service in the next,
and then held to increase his lead to 3:0. Djokovic used his fourth
break point in the seventh game to come back into the set. Both players
held their services and the set went to a tie-breaker. Nole won it 7-1,
making four mini breaks, while Marcos made only one.

Both Djokovic and Baghdatis had chances for break in the third set, but
it was decided in tie-break. This time Marcos was better. He hit some
fantastic shots, made less errors and won it 7-5.

The 21-year-old broke in the first game of the fourth set sending down
a great forehand winner. He went two points down on his serve, but
fought back, taking the hold with four consecutive points. After
failing to convert break point in the third game, Djokovic faced scare
in the sixth, but held for 4:2. He used his third chance for break in
the seventh game to go up 5:2. Novak fought back again from two points
down when serving for the match and closed it 6:2.

Djokovic served 3 aces to Baghdatis's 12, but the Cypriot had 53
unforced errors to Novak's 49. Nole had 36 winners to Marcos's 37. He
capitalised on 5 of 17 break points, while Baghdatis could only convert
1 of his 5 opportunities.

Novak will play against no.7 seed Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals.
The American beat Spaniard Tommy Robredo in straight sets, 7:5 6:1 6:3.

World number three and world number nine have met three times, Novak leads 2-1.

Melbourne heat and Roddick stronger than Nole!

Tennis : Novak Djokovic - Page 7 146

The Australian Open defending champion is out of the tournament after
he had to retire in the fourth set to American Andy Roddick after 2
hours and 29 minutes. The result was 7:6(3) 4:6 2:6 1:2.

Both players were racing through their holds in the first set. It went to a tie-breaker. Djokovic sealed it 7-3.

Novak was 0-30 down in the fifth game of the second set, but he won
four points in a row to go up 3:2. He didn't manage to do the same in
the seventh game when Roddick earned himself two break points, the
first of the match. The American converted the first to take a lead. He
held to 15 to increase it to 5:3. No.7 seed earned himself a triple set
point serving for the set, and won it easily 6:4.

Djokovic looked more tired than his opponent. The temperature was about
40 degrees on court. Roddick made a break at the start of the third
set. Nole earned his first break point of the match and broke back
immediately for 1:1. Djokovic called a trainer after he held his
service. He didn't look good. The Serb wasn't moving well. He continued
to struggle in the heat. Roddick broke him for the second time in the
fifth game to go up 3:2 and then held to increase his lead. The
American won four consecutive points on Novak's service and broke again
for 5:2. He held to love to close the set 6:2.

Djokovic saved four break points in the opening game of the fourth set.
Roddick held to 15 and easily earned himself three break points in the
third game. After breaking Novak's service, no.3 seed retired.

Djokovic hit 8 aces to Roddick's 16.
Nole made 39 unforced errors to Andy's 14.
Both players had 43 winners.
Novak converted his only break point, while Roddick capitalised on 5 of his 12 break point oportunities.

Roddick will play in the semifinals against the winner of the match
between three-time Australian Open champion Swiss Roger Federer (2) and
Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro (8).
